The Shepparton district is synonymous with great food, wine,
waterways and weather. It is a rich agricultural area which has an
international reputation for superior quality dairy and fruit
products. It is known as the Food Bowl of Australia.
The irrigation network, served by the Main East Goulburn
Channel, criss-crosses the region and the neat rows of fruit trees - constantly changing with the seasons
- provide just some of the
contrasts of the area.
Several of Australia's largest food processing companies,
such as Tatura Milk Industries and SPC Ardmona, call the Shepparton
district home.
However the Goulburn Valley's rich soils are not only perfect
for growing fruit and grazing cattle they also provide one of the
best bases for growing vines.
The Dookie district is re-emerging as a wine region after 100
years. Dookie's rich red volcanic soils are some of the oldest in
Victoria and are ideally suited to growing premium wine varieties.
Three vineyards in the Dookie area;
Tallis Wine,
Gentle Annie
and Dookie College Wines are beginning to compete with Australia's
best.
The area is also known for its crops and areas around
Caniambo, about 15km south east of the Shepparton township, boast
brilliant broadacre farms.
The Shepparton region boasts many outdoor and sporting
activities and high class venues.
Shepparton District
is also known for its unique mix of people from other countries, as
well as having the highest population of Aboriginal people in
Victoria, outside of Melbourne.
